Michele Simonetti [b. 1976, Italy] lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. After receiving his Masters in Architecture at the University of Florence [2002], he developed a passion for architectural brutalism and minimalism. He moved to New York in 2014, where he expanded his interest to the intersection of architecture and contemporary art.
At the core of his research are belonging and displacement, the sense of despair that accompanies immigration, and the eerie feeling of belonging in a place new and alien. In his painting practice, blurred memories become lines, geometries and fields of color in compositions of minimal purity and spatial tension. Through a play between abstraction and representation, he explores the relationship between real and imagined worlds, personal and collective memories. Recent exhibitions include solo and group shows in New York, Miami, Madrid, Rome, Milan, and Florence.
