STEVEN LANE
NEW YORK

Steven Lane is a Buffalo, NY-born, Dumbo-based artist. His work has been exhibited at Amano Gallery in Osaka, Earth+Gallery in Tokyo, Cube Gallery at Beijing Winter Olympics, Cello Factory in London, OK Harris Gallery in New York and Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo. After attending the Studio School of New York in 1984, Lane began his travels in Asia and organized the 1987 group show, “New York/Beijing.” He returned to New York in 1993, where he established his studio in Dumbo, and began working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as a Museum Educator. He then continued his teaching practice at Kobe University and the China Central Academy of Fine Arts.

During his trips, Lane's suitcases are traveling studios for art materials, while his clothes are kept in a backpack. Many of the works in this exhibition were made in China, Japan, and New York. All of the art in the exhibition, except for the three large paintings, were made to a scale that could fit into a large suitcase. Lane works with an improvised approach to the totality of each painting in terms of its original form, and conversely with layers of removal, reassembly, and reinvention.
