FOUND TIME
October 24 - December 14
ZAROLAT is proud to present Found Time — a solo exhibition of works by Raleigh, North Carolina-based stone sculptor Matt Byrd. Presenting 13 works shown for the first time, the exhibition comprises freestanding and wall-mounted works hand-carved from stone and hand-built in clay. The diverse textures within each work is a reflection of Byrd’s precision and skill as a stone mason, and a representation of his carving process using minimal hand tools like hammer, chisel, grinder for stone and humble wood instruments for his clay pieces.
Through his use of stone — an ancient material — and painstaking approach to craft, time is at the center of Byrd’s body of work. In Found Time, that idea of history becomes material, through traces of process left visible in carvings, as well as in the rawness of the rock itself. Each stone is a witness to history, including Byrd’s intervention — which itself is only a temporary condition.
Byrd has been a resident artist at the prestigious Centro Internazionale di Scultura in Peccia, Switzerland in 2023 and more recently, at Shiro Oni Studio in Onishi, Japan. Read more about the artist here.
‘Found Time’ is open at ZAROLAT Wednesdays through Saturdays and Tuesdays for private viewings. Book an appointment.
