Matt Byrd is a Raleigh-based sculptor whose abstract stone carvings express the wondrous ephemera of nature. Working primarily in found granite, his interlocking configurations — featuring stones painstakingly carved and textured for hours by hand — show his eye for pleasing proportions and delicate balance. For Byrd, solid construction is key, as is maintaining an experimental approach to the beloved craft of hand chiseling. Trained as a stone mason by his mentor, Brooks Burleson, Byrd has been featured in numerous high-profile design publications including Sight Unseen, Surface, Dwell, AD Germany, AD India, Dezeen, and Luxe, among others. He recently completed a six-month residency at the prestigious Centro Internazionale di Scultura in Peccia, Switzerland. Last summer, Byrd held a solo exhibition at Love House. Prior to that, he held solo exhibitions in his home state of North Carolina — at Fayetteville Street Gallery and My Room Gallery, respectively — and participated in group shows, such as ‘Unearthed’ at Arden White in New Canaan, Connecticut. Inspired by the monumental public works of great sculptors such as Pietro Cascella and Andy Goldsworthy, Byrd aspires to explore his process on a much grander scale, allowing him to develop a new language of forms.
