PIT ROOM
May 14 - July 11
ZAROLAT presents PIT ROOM as a part of NYC x Design at its studio/gallery space in the DUMBO Design District. Following its two solo art exhibitions, the gallery goes back to its roots, presenting a compelling curation of collectible furniture, lighting, sculpture, objects, and artwork, launching new works from its represented artists, and introducing new international design studios into their ever-growing creative community.
The 11th exhibition curated by ZAROLAT follows the gallery’s second anniversary of opening its doors, and is an official NYC x Design festival event celebrated throughout the city. Showcasing one-of-a-kind works by 12 emerging voices, the curation highlights a range of practices that are grounded in formal, functional, and material experimentation — napkins, metals, paint, raphia, linen, wool, ash, glass, and many other materials come together as an exploration of craft and technique, creating delicate and distinctive pieces.
At the core of the gallery’s curatorial approach, the relationship between each piece is meticulously calculated to achieve the most elevated organization of space and experience of perceiving artwork. PIT ROOM, referring to the ‘architectural conversation pit’ — a sunken, built-in seating area that got popularized during the mid-century modern era (1950s–1970s) — is a space where each of the different works contributes their part into an ongoing conversation, a room for constructive debate that encourages exchange, collaboration and growth.
PIT ROOM opened at ZAROLAT in alignment with NYC x Design on May 14th. ZAROLAT also hosted its 5th edition of DUMBO DIALOGUES on May 20th — a conversation across disciplines that brings us all together, as a part of DUMBO x Design day celebrated in the neighborhood.
With its third design week since the opening of its DUMBO location, ZAROLAT continues to shape and contribute to the neighborhood's growing identity as a center for design, and leads with commitment as a local hub for cultural and creative exchange.
