RE-MAKING THE EXISTING
July 12 - August 11
ZAROLAT's first solo show presented in July 2024, showcased a curated selection of paintings by Dumbo-based artist Steven Lane, from 2022–2024.
Lane works with an improvised and direct approach to the totality of each painting in terms of its color, structure and form, or conversely with the removal of these elements which define the visual language of each work. His studio practice works in a manner where the composition of each painting is often developed from previous paintings or existing materials, which are cut, re-assembled, stapled or glued, creating a sense of repetition and order.
The curation within the gallery space reflects the consistency of the collection, by organizing the different categories of work in a distinctive manner that creates an informative dialogue among the pieces. It uses the physical qualities of the space to spotlight each piece, offering a wholesome experience that challenges the conventional ways of viewing art. Within the curation, Lane's paintings are occasionally accompanied by ZAROLAT furnitures.
His usage of materials in the making of his paintings includes collected objects, primed and unprimed canvas, paint, pastels, cloth, film, books and newspapers. By using the ordinary as a part of the whole, Lane engages with the daily occurrence and brings to our attention the profoundness of our everyday lives.
